Ipaya respects and protects the privacy of the individuals that use our service. Please read the following to learn more about how we handle data about you.
What this privacy policy covers
This policy covers how we treat personal information we collect and receive. This information includes:
- Your Ipaya account
- Any information you provide on this site
- Your surfing history on sites that publish pages using Ipaya ("publishers"), after it is automatically copied to us.
What this policy doesn't cover:
- the information that you provide on publishers' sites and stays at those sites.
- the practices of companies that Ipaya does not own or control, or to people that Ipaya does not employ or manage.
Overview
In order to operate the its service Ipaya ("we") must ask you to provide us information about yourself. Ipaya takes the privacy of your personal information very seriously and will use your information only in accordance with the terms of this Privacy Policy. We will not sell or rent your personally identifiable information or a list of our customers to third parties.
By accepting the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service during registration, you expressly consent to our use and disclosure of your personal information in the manner described in this Privacy Policy. This Privacy Policy is incorporated into and subject to the terms of the Ipaya Terms of Service. This Privacy Policy was last updated on March 7, 2003.
Please note that your personal information will be stored and processed on computers in Switzerland and the United States. If you object to your personal information being transferred or used as described in this Privacy Policy, please do not register for any Ipaya service.
Information we collect
Account information
To open a Ipaya account, you must provide us with an account id, password and either your email address or a secret question and answer for password recovery reasons. We will only use this email address for password recovery purposes.
Subscription information
If you pay for a Ipaya subscription, we record a PayPal transaction ID and your PayPal account Email address. There are other information transfered to us by PayPal, including your name and your address. We never look at this information and don't store it either. We store your email address only for enhanced password recovery purposes and to be able to make refunds, but we will never use it for anything else.
Surfing history
If you use Ipaya to access the pages of publishers, we copy your surfing history from all publishers to our database in regular intervals. As long as this data is at the publishers' sites, it is anonymized in several ways:
- publishers don't know who you really are
- since the anonymized key changes every 24 hours, publishers can't use this data to track you for more than 24 hours using the key
- since the anonymized key is different for every site, publishers can't compare their databases among themselves to track you among their sites
As soon as the data is copied to us, we remove the anonymity from your history and store your surfing history, consisting out of:
- The URLs that you have visited
- The publisher that each URL belongs to
- The Date and time when you visited each URL
- The information that it was you who visited these URLs
This list is under your control. You can view it at any time by visiting your list of accessed pages, and you can delete it after the end of the month. We need to keep this list until the end of the month because that's the moment when we distribute your money to all your visited sites. If you delete it, the information is really gone. There are backups, but all backups for this list are overwritten once every month to ensure that your information is deleted even from the backups.
What we delete in detail
When you delete your list, we delete the information that it was you who visited these URLs. The information that pages have been visited is preserved, but any reference that it was you who visited the pages is definitively erased. So what's left is a completely anonymous list of accessed pages that is mixed up with the list of all other users. This is similar to the anonymous access logs every website has. We keep this list for a maximum of 7 months to find out which websites are the most popular and how much their popularity grows. After 7 months, the complete list is deleted and all backups are overwritten.
Monetary transactions summary
Since Ipaya could potentially be used for financial crimes, we need to keep a summary of all monetary transactions, e.g. where your money went. Therefore, at the end of the month, we create a list composed of the following items:
- Month + Year
- Your ID
- Publishers you surfed to this month using Ipaya
- How much money every of these publishers received from you
This list is then copied onto two CD-ROM media. Every other copy of the list is deleted. These CD-ROMs are put into a safe deposit box at a local bank and only brought back if we are legally forced to do so. If this case ever happens, we will notify you on this page.
Publisher information
If you register to publish pages with Ipaya, you must provide us with your site name, your site URL, a internal site name, the URLs of two internal scripts on your site and the PayPal account Email address you wish us to transfer your monthly payout to.
Web site traffic information
Because of the way that the WWW works, when you arrive at a Ipaya web page, we automatically receive the URL of the page that you came from. We also collect information on which pages of our website you visit while you are on the Ipaya site, the type of browser you use, your internet address and the times you access our Web site. We do not track the Web sites that you visit after you leave the Ipaya site.
Cookies
"Cookies" are small amounts of data that reside on your computer and allow us to recognize you as a Ipaya customer if you return to the Ipaya site using the same computer and browser. We send a "user id" cookie to your browser when you log in to your Ipaya account. This cookie allows us to recognize you. If you have a current subscription, the cookie allows us to let you see publisher pages without the need to enter your ID and password every time. The cookie also allows you to visit your account and make changes without entering your ID and password, if you have entered them in the past 30 minutes. Once you log out, this cookie expires and is deleted by your browser.
There is also a cookie that is set by publishers when you visit their Ipaya pages. This cookie is used to optimize the page loading speed. We expect that publishers let these cookies to expire after 24 hours. For additional information, please refer to the privacy policy of the publisher in question.
Customer service correspondence
If you send us correspondence like emails or faxes, we keep this information. We will also keep correspondence we send to you. The reason we keep them is to measure and improve our customer service, and to investigate potential fraud and violations of our Terms of service. We may, over time, delete these records if permitted by law.

We do not sell, rent or otherwisely share your personal information with other people or companies except to provide services you have requested, when we have your permission, or under the following circumstances:
- We respond to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process, or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal crimes
- We think it's necessary to share information in order to prevent, investigate or take action regarding illegal activities, suspect fraud, violations of our Terms of use, or as otherwise required by law.
